The Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) is delighted to announce that Karen Stokes FCIL CL was elected as its new Chair at the CIOL Council meeting held in London on 23 April.
Karen has been a member of CIOL for 15 years and is a Fellow of CIOL. She is a professional freelance translator, working from French to English, specialising in the fields of business, law and international development. Karen is also a Chartered Linguist (Translator).
Karen said: "It is an honour to be taking over as Chair of an organisation that has played a huge part in my professional life since I joined in 2001. I feel very privileged to be stepping into the role at this time, as we look to build on the tremendous efforts made in recent years to ensure that CIOL is well equipped to achieve the strategic objectives set by Council, and I look forward to working with both members and staff."
CIOL would like to take this opportunity to thank out-going Chair Keith Moffitt FCIL for his hard work and dedication during four years in this voluntary role. During his time as Chair, Keith has tirelessly offered his support to CIOL staff and members. He has taken a very active part in the campaigning work of Professional Interpreters for Justice (PI4J), the consortium of interpreters’ organisations which challenges the private outsourcing of interpreter provision to courts and police services in the UK. We look forward to continuing to work with Keith in his role as Member of Council. CIOL has awarded Keith a Fellowship in recognition of his work as Chair.
Keith said: "My four years as Chair of Council during a period of great change for the CIOL have been immensely satisfying and enjoyable, and I am pleased to be continuing my involvement with CIOL as a member of Council and in a number of other roles, including representing CIOL on PI4J. With Karen Stokes as our new Chair and a strong senior management team led by our CEO Ann Carlisle, I feel that CIOL is in very good hands."
We also thank outgoing Council members Marie-Marthe Gervais-le Garff FCIL, Deborah Langton MCIL and Madeleine Lee MCIL for their very valuable contributions to the organisation during their time in office.
A special thank you goes to Tony Bell FCIL, who has stood down as Hon Treasurer and from his role as member of Council. Tony has been involved with CIOL in various professional and voluntary roles: he was Chair of Council and then General Secretary in the 1980s, and he has more recently been Hon Treasurer and once again Chair of Council, and a Trustee of IoL Educational Trust. His knowledge and experience of CIOL will be greatly missed.
CIOL welcomes three new members to Council: Capt Daniel Howard FCIL, Dr Reza Navaei FCIL and Adam Ramsey MCIL CL. We look forward to working with them during their time in office.
Chief Executive Ann Carlisle added "It’s always a sad time when Members serving on Council and other committees decide to stand down, often after many years of active involvement with CIOL. Their knowledge and expertise is always sorely missed but it’s equally exciting, and important at this stage in CIOL’s development, that we welcome new Council Members from new areas of the profession who will continue to drive the organisation forward."
