Japan – culture and language

Event report

Thank you for attending our event about Japanese and Culture. We enjoyed a presentation by Georgina Young about life and work in Japan as a British teacher.

We enjoyed a very informative talk with lots of real-life examples about “doing as the Japanese do” and an insight into the Japanese language. Georgina described enthusiastically what she learned and experienced in her 8 years living and working in Fukuoka, and gave many tips for people who want to work in Japan, or visit this fascinating country.

It was intriguing to learn about the importance of harmony, balance and safety in the culture and in relationships which are expressed in the various ways of apologising, avoiding to say ‘no’ directly and anticipating someone else’s needs before one’s own. We were shown how to work out Japanese menus in Hiragana and Katagana and had a go at some common gestures.

We thank Ms Young for her personal introduction to life in Japan, and for sharing her experiences with us in this engaging talk.

Join the Gloucestershire Network on Zoom for a talk about the Japanese culture and language.

She will give us insights into cultural differences, typical faux-pas, and will give tips and tricks for visitors to Japan. We will also be treated to a brief introduction into the language and a short lesson in Japanese.
