On Tuesday 10 November, the Chartered Institute of Linguists and IoL Educational Trust held their annual awards evening in the beautiful surroundings of Lancaster House, London, followed by a reception to celebrate the 10th anniversary of holding the Royal Charter.
CIOL's Royal Patron His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent once again kindly presented the awards and attended the reception.
The Awards celebrate the highest achievements in the IoL Educational Trust's (IoLET) professional language exams and recognise the significant contribution made by individuals or organisations to fostering the study of languages. Awards were presented for achievement in the Diploma in Translation, Diploma in Public Service Interpreting and Diploma in Police Interpreting.
Awards were also presented for the first time for the new qualification, the Certificate in Languages for Business, developed in response to changes in the school curriculum and to combat the decline in uptake of languages at GCSE and A-level.

The cup was this year awarded to the European Masters in Translation programme developed by the European Commission Directorate General for Translation. The programme provides a network of university programmes offering high quality Masters level training for translators. The Cup was collected by Angeliki Petrits who set up the network.
The Institute of Linguists was granted a Royal Charter in 2005, recognising CIOL's work in the public interest in supporting interpreters, translators and all those who use languages in their work. As a Chartered body, CIOL runs the register of Chartered Linguists, providing a comprehensive, verified and up-to-date source of qualified, practising professional linguists.
CIOL is particularly pleased to hold the awards presentation and anniversary reception at the FCO's Lancaster House as IoLET now provides examination services to the FCO and furthers the relationship between the two organisations.
