As we start a new membership year, CIOL is supporting more professional linguists and linguists in training than ever before. Membership figures currently stand at an amazing 7,358, which is a 29% increase on 2015-16.
New pre-professional grades of membership introduced in September 2016 have contributed significantly to the increase in membership; the new membership pathway is now well established and is providing linguists with the opportunity to join CIOL at an appropriate grade commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Moving the applications process online has streamlined the admissions process and has enabled the membership team, Soheila Phillips, Membership Manager, Yolanna Lamar-Cordoves, Membership Officer, and Jack Sellen, Networks & CPD Manager, to deal with the increase in workload whilst still maintaining the required service levels members expect.
In addition, the changes to Chartered Linguist registration have seen an increase of 126% in the number of Chartered Linguists now registered.
A further success is the introduction of online renewals. At the time of writing, 48% of eligible members1 have renewed online via the new secure online payment portal. A further renewal reminder will be issued shortly; please look out for this reminder to ensure there is no accidental lapse in your membership.
Jane Galbraith Head of Membership said “We have introduced a number of changes over the last 12 months and I am delighted that these have clearly worked. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the membership team for their dedication and professionalism throughout the changes and for their continued commitment to CIOL members.
As the only chartered body for language professionals it is important that we are the go-to choice for linguists. The on-going challenge is to ensure the membership offer encourages members in the pre-professional grades to move into the professional grades of membership and ultimately to seek chartership. Our focus as we enter a new membership year is to encourage all eligible Members and Fellows to apply for chartership so that we can position chartered linguists alongside chartered accountants, engineers, surveyors etc.
It’s an exciting time for CIOL, and, with a growing body of members, we are in a strong position to raise the profile of language professionals worldwide. I would like to conclude by thanking our highly valued members for their continued membership.”
