CIOL Mentoring Platform – call for mentors

The much anticipated mentoring platform is here and it’s live, creating the opportunity for CIOL members at all grades of membership to benefit from each other's knowledge and experience. We are now on the search for mentors wishing to become a part of this new venture. Access to a mentor is a positive step and brings mutual benefits for the mentor as well as the mentee.

Benefits of being a mentor include:
Widen your perspective by gaining insight into how other approach challenges
Improve self-belief and confidence as you realise how much valuable knowledge you have
Enhance leadership and management skills by learning how to improve your listening and
  questioning skills
Improve problem-solving skills as you become exposed to problems and challenges you
may not otherwise have experienced as you help guide your mentee toward a solution
Benefit from ‘reverse mentoring’ as you learn from your mentee

Click below to create an account and we will endeavour to match you up with a mentee.

CIOL Strategy Day

CIOL held its annual Strategy Day in April, hosted by our President, Richard Hardie, at the UBS offices in the City of London, and attended by members of the senior management team, Council and the IoLET Board.

The multiple roles of the modern professional body, setting standards for the profession through qualifications, admissions criteria and the Code of Professional Conduct, offering CPD, training and career support, and advocating on behalf of the profession were just some of the ideas discussed.

Benefit of the month - discount on translation software and
language books

CIOL members at all grades of membership can take advantage of a range of discounts on books and software to help you better carry out your work. These include:

30% discount on memoQ Translator Pro Licence
20% discount on a range of linguistics and translation studies titles from Routledge
30% discount on all books published by Multilingual Matters and Channel View Publications

Customer Service Survey

Thank you to all who participated in the Customer Service Survey. A full report on the results will be available soon.

Congratulations to our three winners, Shabnam Dossani (IoLET Affiliate), Peter Mitchell (MCIL CL) and Ambikaipakan Anandakumaraswamy (ACIL) who have each won 50% off their next membership subscription.

What you said about us:
Always excellent and very efficient.
CIOL staff are passionate about both the organisation and languages in general and that is always evident in my dealings and interactions with them.
I am a new – and very satisfied – member since late 2017. I especially love your website, which is a real one-stop shop. Keep up the great work!

Of course, nothing is perfect and we will take this opportunity to address areas where we can improve our service to our members.

Congratulations to our IoLET Affiliate members

Congratulations to all the IoLET Affiliate members who have just successfully completed their Diploma in Translation.

You are now eligible to upgrade to a higher level of membership, so keep an eye out for an upgrade email which will be sent out soon.

Threlford Cup nominations 2018

The deadline is approaching to submit nominations for the 2018 Threlford Cup, our annual award for significant contribution to the study of languages. Do you know someone who encourages language learning? This could be a teacher, business or organisation, or someone who works within the community to keep language and cultural heritage alive. You can even nominate yourself.

The 2017 winner was the MFL Student Mentoring Project – an initiative funded by the Welsh Government which aims to increase the uptake of languages in schools. Read more about it here.

If you know of a person or project that has encouraged language learning and you would like to put them forward, just download the nomination form and return it to comms@ciol.org.uk by Friday 15 June 2018.
