Your membership renewal for 2018/19 is fast approaching so keep an eye on your inbox, week commencing 16 July, for your invitation to renew. The new renewal fees were agreed at the AGM back in March. If you hold a UK bank account and are not already paying by direct debit, why not switch to this payment method? It takes two minutes to complete the online mandate form via My CIOL; we’ll then do the rest to ensure it is set it up in time for 1 September 2018 deadline. Direct Debit is one of the safest ways to renew and with a mandate in place there will be no accidental lapse in your membership – so peace of mind and one less thing for you to do. Remember, your membership will come to an end on Friday 18 August 2018 so look out for the renewal notice and take prompt action.

GDPR guidance for members

A video of the webinar ‘GDPR – what freelance linguists need to know’ presented by Robyn Banks is now available on our website, free of charge to all CIOL members. The page also includes a series of FAQs based on members’ questions from the webinar. Please bear in mind the FAQs are intended as a guide and do not constitute legal advice.

Benefit of the month: Find-a-Linguist

Find-a-Linguist (FAL) is a free online directory for members of the public, agencies, embassies and others who are looking to engage with a professional linguist, e.g. translator, interpreter, tutor or language specialist. Associates, full Members, Fellows and Chartered Linguists, who wish to advertise their language services, can create and maintain their own directory listings via My CIOL.

FAL is the most visited part of the CIOL website, and one of the most valuable benefits of membership. Make sure you have a listing and it is up-to-date.

CIOL and RAF become official Language Partners

We welcome the Royal Air Force as a new language partner. The new partnership acknowledges the value the RAF places on its linguists, who work as intelligence analysts, weapon systems operators and language trainers, by offering them the opportunity to join CIOL with access to full member benefits.

CEO Ann Carlisle said “CIOL is delighted to have the RAF as a Language Partner and to be able to jointly recognise the wide-ranging professional language skills of RAF personnel. This is just the start and we hope to build on this collaboration for the future.”
