Drop-in sessions

The Interpreting Division Steering Group is organising a series of online “clinic” drop-in sessions for interpreters, especially for (but not limited to) those early on in their career. These are informal online meetings where attendees can ask questions on specific topics and advice from established interpreters.

You still need to book in advance as the number of attendees we can host is limited to 50 places. Please find below more information on the upcoming drop-in session and the specific topic we will be covering.

Drop-in session: Negotiating work terms and conditions for an interpreting assignment

Our panel comprises three of our Steering Group members, Sue Leschen, Lalia Pessoa-White and Diana Singureanu. They will draw on their experience in diverse settings, including legal, business, and conference settings, to outline the key issues to consider when taking on an interpreting assignment and negotiating terms with work suppliers.

They look forward to answering your questions on the following relevant topics:

  • Type of Interpreting Required: mode (sim / consec) and modality (video mediated versus in-person); ensuring that the type of interpreting and any additional equipment / platform required is clearly defined and agreed upon.
  • Duration and Schedule: overtime and breaks.
  • Subject Matter and Preparation Materials: especially if the assignment involves technical or specialized content.
  • Working Conditions: This includes the size of the audience, availability of sound equipment, seating arrangements, and any other environmental factors that could affect the quality of interpreting.
  • Travel and Accommodation: If the assignment requires travel, negotiate terms for transportation, accommodation, and per diem / subsistence allowances.
  • Cancellation Policy: Agree on a policy for cancellations, including deadlines and any fees associated with late cancellations.
  • Confidentiality and Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs).
  • Professional Liability Insurance: What this covers.
  • Feedback and Evaluation: Agree on a method for providing and receiving feedback after the assignment.
  • Rates of Pay: Determine whether the payment will be hourly, daily, or lump sum for the entire project. Also, discuss any additional fees for overtime or specialized services.

Please note that these sessions are not recorded.
