How do I book a CIOL Language Level Assessment?

Booking a CIOL Language Level Assessment is a straightforward three step process:

  • You can register and pay for an assessment securely online by completing the Language Level Assessment Registration and Payment Form
  • You will then be asked to complete a short self–assessment questionnaire, which you will receive from us after you have submitted your booking.
  • You will be contacted by a CIOL registered assessor to arrange a mutually convenient time for the assessment to take place.

A CIOL Language Level Assessment is arranged to fit in with your personal schedule and can be taken online in any suitable location, in which you are most comfortable. All you need is a good WiFi connection and a laptop, computer or tablet with a camera.

Assessments take place by prior agreement and confirmation, usually Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm UK time, with flexibility as needed for special cases.

What to expect on the day of your assessment?

The assessor will contact you as previously agreed and confirmed.

Before the assessment commences the assessor will take you through an ID check. Please make sure you have your photographic ID ready. Acceptable forms of ID are passport, driving licence or identity card. Once the assessor is satisfied that the ID check has been completed satisfactorily the assessment will begin.

The assessment will take approximately 15 minutes during which time the assessor will engage in conversation with you and ask a series of questions on various topics. The assessor will be assessing your pronunciation, fluency, choice of vocabulary, grammar (verb tenses, gender agreement, etc.) throughout this time. The assessor will confirm when the assessment has been completed.

What to expect after the assessment?

CIOL will confirm the outcome of your assessment within 10 working days of the assessment taking place. If your level is confirmed as being between CEFR A2 and C1 you will receive a certificate. If your level is below CEFR A2, you will not receive a certificate but will be provided with a short feedback summary from the assessor on your performance to guide your future learning and improvement.
