The event will begin with a formal AGM. There will be an open forum after the meeting allowing members to raise matters of interest or concern. A three course lunch will follow and the event will close with a talk “Young Translators as Mediators of Linguistic and Cultural Knowledge” presented by Dr Humera Iqbal and Dr Sarah Crafter.

Speaker bios

Dr Humera Iqbal
Dr Humera Iqbal is a Lecturer in Psychology at UCL Institute of Education and is based at the Thomas Coram Research Unit. She is interested in identity and the migration experiences of families and young people; in particular, how they engage with institutions in new settings, parenting and the impact of generations on family life. She is also interested in mental health and wellbeing in young people. Her recent work has focused on ‘child language brokers’—young people who translate for their families following migration to a new host setting.

Dr Sarah Crafter
Dr Sarah Crafter is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the Open University. She has a Ph.D. in Cultural Psychology and Human Development and her theoretical and conceptual interests are grounded in sociocultural theory, transitions, critical or contested ideas of ‘normative’ development and cultural identity development. Her work with child language brokers grew out of broader interest in the constructions or representations of childhood in culturally diverse settings.
