Event report
On Friday 30 September, a group of around 15 met up at the V&A museum to visit the Africa Fashion exhibition. Although it was a self-guided visit, several of the group commented that the organised event had given them the motivation to come and see the exhibition, & how much nicer it was to visit with a group of people that you can then discuss what you've seen with. There was certainly plenty of discussion about diversity, cultural representation and the items on display, both as we went round and afterwards! Networking started even as the group was gathering before the exhibition, and continued right through lunch, although we did have to split into a couple of groups in the café. As we had a good mix of specialisms, focus and career stages among the attendees, there was a lot of valuable information and advice shared including about approaching new clients, the value of being a member of organisations such as CIOL, and how to present your skills as a new freelance translator.
Join the London & South East network for a self-guided visit to the Africa Fashion exhibition at the V&A, followed by a networking lunch.
Attendees will learn about the spectrum of African cultures & their postcolonial rise through the lens of fashion, see how traditional fabrics have & continue to be used to communicate overt and symbolic messages about independence, cultural values & aspirations, and gain some knowledge of key terms from many African languages that are used and explained throughout.
