Withdrawal of unit pathways and launch of the unified Law pathway
Following a review of our qualifications and in light of the need to remain up to date with the sector, we have decided to withdraw a number of units from the DPSI qualification.
The launch of the unified, Law pathway does not affect prior achievement. The CIOL Qualifications Level 6 Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) is not being withdrawn and all units achieved to date and within the specified completion timeframe remain valid.
Previously, the DPSI qualification was offered in multiple Law pathways, which were UK country specific (covering England, Scotland and Northern Ireland). DPSI holders were limited to working only in one jurisdiction focusing on English Law or Scottish Law or Northern Irish Law only. This is no longer the case, and with the newly launched unified, Law pathway holders will have the opportunity to work across the whole of the UK. Regional restrictions have been removed.
15 unit pathways being withdrawn are as follows:
Unit 01 – Interpret consecutively and simultaneously in the Public Services context of: English Law (K602/2328), Scottish Law (M/602/2329), Northern Irish Law (Y/506/1731) |
Unit 02 – Provide a sight translation into English in the Public Services context of: English Law (K/602/2393), Scottish Law (M/602/2394), Northern Irish Law (D/506/1732) |
Unit 03 – Provide a sight translation from English in the Public Services context of: English Law (D602/2407), Scottish Law (H/602/2408), Northern Irish Law (H/506/1733) |
Unit 04 – Translate into English in the Public Services context of: English Law (K/602/2412), Scottish Law (M/602/2413), Northern Irish Law (K/506/1734) |
Unit 05 – Translate from English in the Public Services context of: English Law (Y/602/2437), Scottish Law (H/602/2439), Northern Irish Law (M/506/1735) |
Unified Law pathway
The current English Law, Scottish Law and Northern Irish Law unit pathways are being replaced by a single unified Law unit pathway, which will retain the original format, content and learning outcomes, and will consist of the same five units:
- Unit 01 – Interpret consecutively and simultaneously in the Public Services context of Law (H/650/5815)
- Unit 02 – Provide a Sight Translation into English in the Public Services context of Law (D/650/5813)
- Unit 03 – Provide a Sight Translation from English in the Public Services context of Law (D/650/5814)
- Unit 04 - Translate into English in the Public Services context of Law (Y/650/5811)
- Unit 05 – Translate from English in the Public Services context of Law (A/650/5812)
Rationale
Candidate numbers for Scottish and Northern Ireland Law have declined over recent years, and we consider that the updated unified Law pathway of the CIOL Qualifications Level 6 Diploma in Public Service Interpreting 501/1250/8 fulfils the need for all those candidates wishing to work as interpreters for Police forces and within criminal justice contexts in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as providing wider employment options for successful candidates.
What this means for current and new candidates
We aim to protect the interests of all current candidates who may have already completed one or more units of the different Law pathways.
The format of the exam remains unchanged, and Law content will be more generic and not country specific. The difference between the previous English Law, Scottish Law, Northern Irish Law and the new Law pathway is that your Full Award Certificate will show that you have achieved the DPSI qualification in Law rather than English Law, Scottish Law or Northern Irish Law. The certificate will show which units were previously awarded for English Law, Scottish Law, Northern Irish Law and Law. Unit numbers will be different.
All past papers are still a very useful preparation resources.
Depending on when the first unit Pass was awarded, the relevant completion period will still apply, providing the opportunity to complete the full qualification and any outstanding units by achieving units from the new Law pathway qualification only.
Therefore, if you have already passed units in English Law or Scottish Law or Northern Irish Law, but you still have units to complete in order to obtain the full qualification, you will be able to register for the exam as usual and re-sit the units required. To clarify, you do not need to start the qualification from the start, CIOLQ will transfer your units previously achieved across to the new Law pathway.
