Finding a Linguist

 CIOL Language Professionals

CIOL language professionals apply their language skills in the UK and internationally across a wide range of language-related activities.

Our Chartered Linguists

Our Chartered Linguists are professionals who have had their competences recognised as meeting an established set of professional standards, educational and skills criteria by CIOL, the professional body for linguists backed by UK Royal Charter. Chartered Linguists are actively practising, accredited within the languages sector, as well as being committed to Continuing Professional Development.

Our Translators

A translator renders a piece of written language from its source language into a target language.  Translation typically flows in one direction – into the native language of the translator.

Professional translators have an informed and nuanced cultural understanding of the meaning and significance of what they translate. The content is accurately conveyed, faithfully and in its entirety, maintaining its original sense, meaning and the correct register (degree of formality) to reflect the tone and meaning of the original text.

Our Interpreters

An interpreter will enable you to speak in your language face-to-face with your contact, who uses their language, by transposing (i.e. verbally translating) what is said from one language into another. The chosen language pair can be interpreted either in both directions, or in just one direction.

With a professional interpreter, the spoken content between you and your contact will be accurately conveyed, faithfully and in its entirety, maintaining its original sense, meaning and the correct register (degree of formality) to reflect the tone and content of the exchanges between you and your contact.

Professional interpreters will also have an informed and nuanced cultural understanding of the meaning and significance of what they interpret and will often have had specific training or will hold specific qualifications which demonstrate awareness of the sector or context in which they interpret.

Our Languages Academics, Teachers and Tutors

Our languages academics, teachers and tutors actively teach and research languages. Languages academics and teachers are often bilingual or multilingual or have a high level or attainment in one or more languages.

They use their languages in school teaching, academically, professionally or for other educational purposes to communicate or facilitate learners’ ability to use and access communication with different cultures and communities, often using a language pair like an Interpreter or a language combination like a Translator.

Our Linguists in Business, Professions and Government

CIOL Linguists all have high levels of professional attainment in their languages, and many have specialist knowledge and expertise in different domains of work, for example working in businesses, the professions (e.g. law, accountancy, engineering) the armed forces or government and public services.
