This was our best-attended online event to date, with 16 participants signing into the Zoom session from their homes under lockdown around Europe, from Ireland to Portugal. The group included four Russian speakers, who were able to contextualise the film for the rest of us, untangling the universal themes and the specific reflections of Russian culture. We also had many questions about the use of language and the subtitles, which Liudmila, Tatiana, Katie and Michelle were able to answer. Many of us had found Loveless a sad and bleak film to watch, but our discussion was warm and lively, even spilling over onto our Facebook page after the event. Many thanks to all those who took part.
The Midlands Network is visiting Russia on its next remote film night. Watch the 2017 film ‘Loveless’ (Russian and Tajik, with English subtitles). Then join other members of the Midlands Network in a Zoom meeting to discuss the film, the languages and cultures it portrays, and to reflect on its message.
The film: “Loveless uses its riveting portrait of a family in crisis to offer thought-provoking commentary on modern life in Russia -- and the world beyond its borders.” It was nominated for best foreign language film in the 2018 Oscars, Golden Globes and BAFTAs. The film’s director, Andrey Zvyagintsev, also won two Cannes Film Festival awards for it in 2017.
The discussion: If you are interested in coming, please send an email to midlands@ciol.org.uk and we will provide you with a link to join the Zoom meeting on Sunday 10th May at 4 p.m. Anyone who is not familiar with Zoom is welcome to join the meeting 5 minutes earlier to explore the platform and the functions we will use in the conversation. You can watch the film at any time before the Zoom meeting.
