Almost every industry is now highly influenced by technology, and translation is no exception. In this online event, we will hear from 4 different speakers from the translation profession about the latest innovations in technology available to translators.
There will be three presentations on the following topics:
*Beyond the keyboard and the mouse: Interactive translation dictation
Presenter: Julián Zapata
Dictation is a multi-millenary practice in writing and translation. In the 21st century, in the age of ubiquitous computing, multimodal interaction and AI, we have an unprecedented opportunity to revive and reinvigorate it. Emerging forms of human-computer interaction beyond the keyboard and mouse offer us many benefits, from productivity to ergonomics, both in (translated) text production, revision and post-editing, and in the performance of other peripheral language tasks. However, the integration of these new technologies (speech, touch, mobile and cloud-based, among others) into our workflow must be done gradually, in a step-by-step fashion. This hands-on workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to reflect on the potential of interactive translation dictation (ITD) and equip them with strategies for integrating this technique into their work.
Key take-aways:
- Differentiating between the different types of sight translation and translation dictation;
- Understanding the main benefits of using emerging forms of human-computer interaction beyond keyboard and mouse input;
- Developing the skills required for the gradual integration of ITD into professional practice.
*AI in Translation: Friend or Foe?
Presenters: Dan Thomas and Marc Fisher
AI is becoming an increasingly sought-after and integrated part of the translation industry. But in what ways is AI revolutionising the industry, and what might the downsides be to an increasing automated field. In this webinar, we will go over how AI plays a role in the translation industry, where it can be of benefit to both clients and linguists, but also where it may pose challenges moving forward.
Key take-aways:
- Understanding the ways in which AI is revolutioning the translation profession;
- What the downsides might be to an increasing automated field;
- How AI plays a role in the translation profession;
- The benefits of AI to both clients and linguists.
Dan Thomas has been working in the language industry for 5 years and as the manager of the translation department at Dialogue Language Services for the past 2 years. Passionate about languages and technology, he is fascinated by how they can work together.
Marc is a Senior Localisation Project Manager at Dialogue Language Services and has spent a number of years working in LSPs, supporting clients with their language needs in both the public and private sectors. He enjoys finding solutions to issues facing both clients and linguists in a fast-moving technical landscape.
*Neural machine translation: introductory concepts and integration with computer-assisted translation tools
Presenter: Leonardo Zilio
He will talk about:
- What is needed to train an NMT system;
- What embeddings and sub-words are;
- What contextualised embeddings are;
- How to adapt NMT models to a new domain or style and then integrate them into CAT tools.
Leonardo Zilio graduated in Translation Studies (German-Portuguese) in 2006, finished his Master Dissertation in 2009, and completed his Doctoral Thesis in 2015 at the Institute of Linguistics, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). From 2015 to 2018, he was awarded two post-doctoral stays in Natural Language Processing and Computational Linguistics at the Institute of Informatics, UFRGS, and at the Centre de traitement automatic du langage (CENTAL), Université catholique de Louvain. In 2019, he enjoyed a time dedicated to translation as a freelancer in Brazil, before joining the Centre for Translation Studies (CTS), University of Surrey. He recently moved to Germany, where he works as a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of German Language and Literature, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. He has accumulated more than ten years' experience as a professional translator (English / French / German > Portuguese) and editor (Portuguese).
