The Hong Kong Society (HKS) has been organising seminars to provide continuing professional development opportunities for our members. We cordially invite you to attend these free seminars. The coming seminar will be on “Open Educational Tools for Language Teaching and Learning”. It will take place from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm Hong Kong Time (10:30 am – 11:30 am UK time) on 30 October 2023. The seminar will be delivered by Mr. Duan Chenggui, who will introduce open educational tools and their significance in educational contexts. He will also demonstrate various open educational tools which can be used for language teaching and learning purposes.

A certificate of 1.5 hour continuing professional development will be given to secondary school English teachers in Hong Kong who attended the seminar.

In today’s digital era, open educational tools have revolutionized the field of language teaching and learning, offering new possibilities for educators and learners alike. The webinar will begin with an introduction to open educational tools and their significance in educational contexts. It will emphasize the advantages of open educational tools, including cost-effectiveness, adaptability, and the collaborative nature of development. The speaker will then share and demonstrate various open educational tools which can be used for language teaching and learning purposes, ranging from the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) to translation/interpretation.
About the Speakers:
Duan Chenggui is currently an Assistant Manager at the School of Open Learning, Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU). After obtaining an MA in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics from Central South University in Changsha, he worked as the Project Manager at the China Representative Office of the Open University UK (OUUK) in Beijing for six years. In this role, he was responsible for promoting OUUK’s distance learning course materials and degree programmes, as well as providing consultancy services. After that, he served as an Associate Researcher at the Research and E-Learning Unit and the Centre for Continuing Educational and Lifelong Learning at the School of Continuing and Professional Studies of the University of Hong Kong (HKUSPACE), and as Online Teaching and Learning Manager at Chu Hai College of Higher Education in Hong Kong. His primary research interests include open educational practice, distance education, online teaching, open educational resources (OER), Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), open source software, and more. He has published over 20 academic papers in related fields.
