CIOL's Lincolnshire Society Networking Lunch and Discussion

Event report

CIOL's Lincolnshire Society Networking Lunch and Discussion - 16 November 2024

There was a festive air at the Wig & Mitre in Lincoln when members of the Lincolnshire Society met for lunch on Saturday 16 November 2024, with Christmas decorations already on display and the Lincoln Farmers’ Market on the cobbles of Castle Square close by, overlooked by the Cathedral and the Castle. Over lunch a fascinating discussion included the article in The Linguist (Issue 63/3) entitled 'AI: Stop or Go’. Dr John Whittaker afterwards spoke to members about the way in which AI could help translators express ideas in the target language and he provided several examples of different versions of two texts created by AI writing assistant software.

The discussion then moved on to court interpreting, with an interpreter recounting his own recent experiences and thoughts on the current situation.

It was a relaxed and enjoyable meeting with delicious food, which luckily took place two days before snow descended on Lincoln!
