Drop-in session - Can interpreters ever be truly neutral or is neutrality a myth?

The Interpreting Division Steering Group is organising a series of online “clinic” drop-in sessions for interpreters, especially for (but not limited to) those early on in their career. These are informal online meetings where attendees can ask our experienced panel members questions and ask for advice on a specific topic.

You still need to book in advance as the number of attendees we can host is limited to 100 places. Please find below more information on the upcoming drop-in session and the specific topic we will be covering.

Drop-in session: Can interpreters ever be truly neutral or is neutrality a myth?

Join the CIOL Interpreting Division for an in-depth discussion tailored to interpreters working in various different domains such as conference settings, business, or public service. This session goes beyond the basics of interpreter neutrality, challenging assumptions and examining the biases of other professionals who we work with which can also shape the interpreting experience.

Through real-life scenarios, delve into how interpreters manage conflicts of interest, recognise and address biases, and navigate the complexities of applying the Code of Professional Conduct.

What the session will cover:

- Empathy vs Compassion from other professionals: Where do empathy and compassion come in, and when, if ever, is it appropriate to show emotion? Can complete neutrality truly be achieved, and are codes of conduct overly prescriptive or open to interpretation?

- Objectivity and Bias: Explore the challenges of maintaining objectivity, recognising our own biases, and dealing with prejudice from other participants. What can interpreters do when faced with these complexities?

- Mental Well-being and Resilience: Interpreting can be a high-stress profession. We’ll share strategies to support interpreters’ self-care and resilience.

Register now and join us for a thought-provoking conversation that addresses the real challenges of the profession.

Please note that these sessions are not recorded.
