AGM 2023 - Challenge, change and chartership

CIOL Chair of Council Report

Ahead of the AGM on 4 April 2023, CIOL members can download the Annual Report 2017-2023 which summarises our performance since I was elected to Council in 2017.

While writing it, I realised how much has changed over the past six years which have probably been the most challenging in the history of CIOL. Economic, social and political events as well as the rise in AI have disrupted business practices the world over – including ours. Add to this the need for better recognition, improved rates of pay for professional linguists, as well as the need to drive language learning and build the next generation of linguists, then our agenda has been full.

Like many organisations we have had to adapt to change. We have done this in many ways – refocusing our regulated qualifications portfolio with the Level 6 Certificate in Translation (CertTrans), developing and reskilling our membership, facilitating a clearer understanding of how technology can be leveraged; internally we have remodelled our governance to create smarter efficiencies and at the same time embed ED&I throughout. At the heart of all this, the meaning and value of our Royal Charter and Chartership have remained our North Star.

Mutatio est solus assidue – change is the only constant. Nobody knows what the future will bring, although I am optimistic that there are many positive opportunities ahead and that we will continue to work with other stakeholders, governments and academia to realise these.

The AGM report outlines just one chapter in the history of CIOL and from a personal perspective the past six years have been challenging but thrilling. Together with our staff, you as members are all part of this chapter and have helped to shape our history. For this, thank you. Please do come to the AGM and help us to continue the story and shape the future.
